“I’d lost the joy of dentistry under the weight of running the business — I needed a way to get it back.”

PhD, BDS, MSc, MFGDP (UK), MFDS RCPS (Glas), MRD RCS (Edin), FDS RCS Ed, FCGDent, Specialist in Prosthodontics
Dr Neil Wilson never originally set out to own a dental practice. Co-ownership had once allowed him to practise on his own terms, but when his business partner retired, the full responsibility landed squarely on his shoulders.
“For more than a decade, I carried the business alone,” he explains. “Running the practice was never my favourite part of dentistry. I felt constant pressure — making sure there were sufficient funds to pay staff and suppliers, checking the bank account daily. It consumed far too much mental energy.”
Over time, that pressure began to take its toll.
“The time and brainpower I was spending on the business should have been spent with patients or developing my specialist skills. I’d lost touch with the parts of dentistry I was truly passionate about.”
Like many principals, Neil explored his options. What he saw in the traditional corporate market concerned him.
“I don’t know a single colleague who sold to a traditional corporate and felt completely happy afterwards. My fear was that finances would be prioritised above patients — that investment in facilities, fair pay and staff retention would suffer. That simply wasn’t aligned with how I wanted to practise.”
When his broker introduced him to DeNovo Dental Partners, Neil approached the conversation with an open mind.
“I didn’t have any preconceived expectations. But from the first meeting, there was openness and transparency. I was told I would become a Partner — not an employee — and that I would retain control of the practice while reducing my financial exposure. That combination caught my attention.”
One element in particular stood out.
“There were no deferred payments and no imposed targets. That was a complete game-changer. The idea that I could continue focusing on my clinical passions without someone setting arbitrary growth targets was incredibly reassuring.”
Beyond the financial structure, it was the tone of the conversations that resonated.
“They didn’t talk about retirement. They talked about the next chapter. That reframing made all the difference. This wasn’t about winding down — it was about resetting.”
Since joining DeNovo, Neil describes a palpable shift.
“I genuinely wasn’t expecting to retain as much freedom as I have. I even wondered if I’d missed something in the small print. But the promises became reality. I make my own decisions, including larger investments like redesigning the website, and they’re met with positivity.”
Perhaps most importantly, the mental burden has lifted.
“They’ve taken a huge weight off my shoulders. I’m back to doing dentistry. I’m booking courses around the world again. I’m working in the way I always wanted to work.”
For his team, continuity has been key.
“There has been virtually no noticeable change day to day. That stability was vital for staff and patients alike.”
Reflecting on his experience, Neil believes the model offers something many dentists don’t realise they need.
“You don’t have to wait until retirement to change the structure of ownership. If you want to continue practising but without carrying the full financial stress alone, this provides a genuine alternative.”
He pauses, then smiles.
“For me, it’s given me an extra lease of life. The last several years of my career now feel exciting rather than heavy. That’s something I didn’t think was possible.”
